Last December 2026, Mabuhay House Society had the privilege of meeting with and presenting our current proposal to Hon. Anne Kang, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, alongside Hon. Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, and Hon. Mable Elmore, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. During this meeting, Mabuhay House Society shared our past initiatives, current programming, and future vision. We were grateful to receive positive feedback, encouragement, and valuable recommendations from the Ministers, which will help guide our work moving forward. We are honoured by the support shown and look forward to building on this momentum. 🅜🅐🅑🅤🅗🅐🅨 🅣🅡🅘🅥🅘🅐: Dr. José Rizal 𝗗𝗿. 𝗝𝗼𝘀é 𝗥𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗹 was a writer, doctor, and intellectual whose life became an act of resistance. Through Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, he exposed the corruption of Spanish colonial rule—especially the abuse of power by friars and the state—using the pen as a weapon for truth. He called not for violent revolt, but for dignity, education, and equal rights for Filipinos. For this, he was exiled, tried, and executed in 1896—yet his death awakened a nation. 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟯𝟬 is significant because it marks Rizal’s execution in Bagumbayan (now Luneta). This day, now Rizal Day, is a national moment of remembrance—honouring sacrifice, critical thought, and the power of ideas over oppression. His death unified Filipinos across classes and regions, accelerating the revolution and shaping a shared national consciousness. Rizal warned us: “There are no tyrants where there are no slaves.” Today, as Filipinos continue to advocate for spaces like a Filipino Cultural Centre, December 30 reminds us that culture, memory, and education are forms of resistance. Building our own institutions is not just about a building—it’s about reclaiming voice, visibility, and self-determination. His struggle lives on in our collective fight to be seen, heard, and rooted.
A little throwback—but also perfectly in season. 🌾🇵🇭 In September 2025, Mabuhay House Society was honoured to be invited by @amicaseniorlifestyles West Vancouver, led by Program Manager Paige, to collaborate and bring Filipino flavours, culture, and stories to their Sip & Savour event. Throughout the month of September, AMICA embraced Filipino identity within their seniors’ home—decorating the space with Philippine flags and creating a warm, culturally immersive environment for residents and guests. The month-long celebration featured an art exhibition showcasing works by Mixed Media and Music Artists Society of BC member and Filipino-Canadian artist @paulinaconstancia, who also led a cross-stitched parol workshop with residents. The program included live music and serenades by Ed and Salve and Friends, virtual tours and cultural storytelling led by our Director Sammie Jo Rumbaua, and a Filipino bazaar with special participation from @platofilipino. We were also honoured to be joined by the wonderful Queen Volunteer, @riarenouf , whose warmth and generosity added an extra layer of joy to the experience. The celebration concluded with a Filipino dinner and a vibrant performance by @anahawfilcan Filipino Canadian Performing Arts Society. This collaboration was a meaningful opportunity to connect with community beyond the Filipino diaspora. We are deeply grateful for the trust and confidence of AMICA West Vancouver in allowing Mabuhay House Society to create experiences that are thoughtful, joyful, and memorable. On December 6, 2025, Mabuhay House Society was honoured to be invited to the Sabai Social, organized by the Cambodian Cultural Centre, held at the UBC Medical Student & Alumni Centre. The evening was a beautiful celebration of community and connection, bringing together people from across Southeast Asia and beyond. Guests were welcomed with an abundance of delicious Southeast Asian–inspired dishes, fresh fruits, and shared meals that encouraged conversation and togetherness. The night was also filled with lively games that brought everyone into joyful participation, laughter, and collaboration. At Mabuhay House Society, we deeply value cultural partnerships and cross-community solidarity. Being invited to gatherings like this affirms how community-driven work can extend beyond one culture and create meaningful, lasting impact across nations. These moments of exchange remind us that our shared histories and futures are stronger when built together. The Cambodian Cultural Centre is a newly established nonprofit organization dedicated to celebrating and sustaining Khmer culture. Their mission is to promote Khmer heritage through arts, music, cuisine, and community-based events, while also prioritizing education through language learning and historical awareness. Through their initiatives, they strive to foster deeper appreciation for Khmer culture and make a positive impact on the communities they serve. We are grateful for the invitation and look forward to future opportunities to learn, collaborate, and grow together.

In the true Pinoy Christmas spirit, Mabuhay House Society gifted a handcrafted parol to the Vancouver Canucks as a symbol of gratitude in celebrating Filipino Heritage Night for the very first time at Rogers Arena on December 5, 2025. The parol was designed and constructed by our staff member Khim Mata Hipol, a Vancouver-based artist and photographer. Measuring approximately 4 x 4 feet the piece was created using repurposed Vancouver Canucks posters, featuring the faces of well-loved Canucks players. At its centre is a festive Christmas village illuminated with lights, with a long flowing buntot (tail) — embodying the warmth, generosity, and joy of a Filipino Christmas. The parol was proudly displayed during Filipino Heritage Night. Mabuhay House Society was honoured to be a proud sponsor of Paskong Salu-Salo — a heartfelt Christmas gathering created to bring hope, care, and joy to our beloved kababayan affected by natural disasters and ongoing challenges in the Philippines. The event featured a special Paradox Vancouver Chef’s Custom Lunch Menu, and successfully raised funds to support communities back home impacted by multiple calamities. More than a fundraiser, Paskong Salu-Salo was a deeply meaningful Filipino Christmas celebration — grounded in pasko, community, and collective care. And of course, not a Pinoy Christmas is complete without food shared generously.
