Outliers and Outlaws + Because of You: A History of Kilawin Kolektibo
Sept 21, 2025
12:30 PM
Location
International Village
Watch Online in BC
Sept 22, 12 AM - Sept 28, 11:59 PM
Join us for this joint screening of two documentaries: Outliers and Outlaws and Because of You: A History of Kilawin Kolektibo.
With the dream of escaping to an idyllic lesbian community, hundreds of women and lesbian couples descended upon the small town of Eugene, Oregon in droves in the 1960s to 1990s in search of a life and community free from the constraints of patriarchy, misogyny, and homophobia. Through intimate archival footage and endearing interviews with the now-elders that lived this history, Outliers and Outlaws reveals the untold story of this large, vibrant lesbian community.
Part of the Eugene Lesbian History Project, this film not only documents a unique local history, but also affirms the profound liberatory possibilities of daring to imagine–and to try to build–a world that uplifts love between and among women. Directed by veteran documentarian Courtney Hermann and featuring music by Dolly Parton.
Followed by a post-screening Q&A with the filmmakers of Outliers and Outlaws.

Treasure of the Rice Terraces
Treasure of the Rice Terraces
Filipino Canadian filmmaker Kent Donguines travels back to the Philippines to reconnect with his roots. In a nation with over 134,000 years of history and centuries of colonization — under Spanish, American, and Japanese rule — Donguines notes a shared feeling of weakened traditional identity among many Filipinos he knows and meets. A vital part of their heritage, the centuries-old practice of tattooing, was banned by colonizers and even shunned by Filipinos.
Donguines travels to Buscalan, a secluded mountain community, to discover more about the revival of Indigenous Kalinga tattoos. Guided by 107-year-old master artist Apo Whang-od, Donguines learns the deep history and symbolism behind the tattoos. The revival of this Indigenous body art tradition offers a powerful way to preserve culture, spark pride, and strengthen identity, and Treasure of the Rice Terraces shows how traditions can survive, evolve, and inspire both local communities and cultural identity worldwide.
Featuring:
Maria “Apo-Whang-Od” Oggay, Kent Donguines, Grace Palicas, Lars Krutak, Kim Atienza, Michelle Marquez Dee
Director : Kent Donguines
Kent Donguines is a Filipino Canadian filmmaker based in Vancouver. He is the CEO of Aimer Films Inc. and produced the award-winning CBC short documentary This Ink Runs Deep, which premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. He also wrote, directed, and produced the Telus Storyhive short film Kalinga (2020), a documentary about the sacrifices Filipina nannies make to work in Canada. That film had its world premiere at the DOXA Documentary Film Festival and won the Kathleen Shannon Award from the Yorkton Film Festival. Donguines recently completed his first feature documentary, Canadian Adobo.
Filmography: Kalinga (2020); Brown Enough (2021); Paco (2022)

Lasa ng Imperyo/A Taste of Empire
Lasa ng Imperyo/A Taste of Empire - Lasa Ng Imperyo/Taste of Empire
October 9-19, 2025
Presentation House Theatre
333 Chesterfield Avenue, North Vancouver, BC V7M 3G9
Superstar of the culinary world, Master Chef Maximo Cortés is offering an exclusive demonstration, sharing the secrets of his trademarked Imperial Cuisine cooking techniques with you, his lucky, elite guests! Or at least, he would have, if he had shown up.
Luckily, the witty and intrepid Sous-Chef Mela is here to save the day! Her task? To cook rellenong bangus, or stuffed milkfish, a dish whose intricate preparation process takes its roots from the country's culinary traditions and colonial past. In a surprising fusion of theatre and gastronomy, this live cooking demonstration pairs the harsh truths of a global food system with shocking humour. Performed in Tagalog with English surtitles, this show guides audiences across the layered history of Philippine cultural heritage through a live cooking demonstration.
This adaptation of Jovanni Sy's A Taste of Empire reimagines this acclaimed play through a fresh female perspective. As the dish is brought to life, so too are the stories embedded within its ingredients.
Food will be served. Contact 604-990-3473 if you have allergy concerns.
Ages: 14+
A rice & beans theatre Production
Presented by Presentation House Theatre
With Community Partners Kasama Chocolate and NPC3
Translated and performed by Carmela Sison in Tagalog with English surtitles.

Lasa ng Imperyo/A Taste of Empire
Lasa ng Imperyo/A Taste of Empire - Lasa Ng Imperyo/Taste of Empire
October 9-19, 2025

Mga Kwento - Many Stories:
Mga Kwento - Many Stories:
Sunday September 7th from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at the k'emk'em'elay healing garden 117 E Hastings St
Stories connect us. Stories teach us. Stories allow us to dream up new worlds, building a bridge to our ancestors & future generations. Stories shape and define us, stories heal us.
Join us for an evening of ‘kuwentuhan’ (sharing stories) at the Ke'kemkemelay Healing Garden at 117 E Hastings St. Kuwentuhan is an Indigenous Filipino storytelling method that invokes Kapwa (shared self) through sharing our individual stories and forming them into a collective that represents our history, cultural values and wisdoms. In the wake of the Lapu Lapu tragedy, we invite those affected to move through moments of darkness and into the light through an evening of multisensory play, poetry, storytelling & film.
Through an open format play, participants are encouraged to explore the garden and the activations offered to the space such as: charm making inspired by anting-anting, chocolate tastings provided by Kasama chocolate, sharing circle with invited Filipino poets & storytellers, collective mythology writing relay & film presentations.
The programme is curated in collaboration & friendship by Sophia Santos English & anata laylay.
This event is FREE but spots are limited so please RSVP to sophia@gachet.org to reserve your spot!
The project is graciously funded by United Way Kapwa Strong Fund.

Open Call: The Balikbayan Project
OPEN CALL: THE BALIKBAYAN PROJECT
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Centre A is delighted to announce a new 4-month mentorship program called The Balikbayan Project, for self-identifying Filipino youths starting on August 30, 2025. Facilitated by Lead Programmer, Geraldine Yaris aims to reflect on the Filipino concept of Kapwa which encapsulates shared identity and interconnectedness. This youth programming series and culminating exhibition will provide an opportunity for youths to commune, grieve and respond to the continued need for a physical space for the Filipino community, especially in the light of the Lapu Lapu tragedy which occurred on April 26, 2025. Balikbayan, literally meaning return to one’s country, refers to the practice of shipping goods from overseas Filipinos back to their families and signifies the return of youth to their own roots through culture, community, acts of care, sharing, and resourcefulness.
This project centres self-identifying, underrepresented Filipino youths who may not have had formal opportunities to engage in the arts, cultural mentorship, or community leadership. Centre A aims to support these youths in cultivating leadership skills, affirming cultural identity through culturally specific art-making and community-building workshops that contribute to the long-term resilience of Filipino arts and culture in British Columbia. This cohort model also ensures that participants build peer networks that extend beyond the program, contributing to a stronger, more interconnected Filipino Canadian arts ecosystem.
The participants will leave with an opportunity to showcase their work in a collaboratively curated exhibition at Centre A from January – March 2026.
This program is supported by United Way’s Kapwa Strong Fund.
PARTICIPANT ELIGIBILITY:
Open to self identifying Filipino youth or young adults between the ages of 18-25 at the start of the program residing in Metro Vancouver (a maximum of five participants will be chosen for the program)
Must be able to commit to the entirety of the program’s duration (a total of 10 sessions over a 4-month period)
Have an interest in contemporary art and culture, writing, and/or curation, and be passionate about Vancouver’s arts and cultural scenes
Have an interest in Filipino arts and culture
Be willing to learn, listen, and work alongside a community of fellow youths, guest speakers, artists, curators and Centre A Staff
Able to commit to developing work(s) and participate in the curation of the exhibition
BENEFITS:
A two-month long group exhibition of the participant’s works from January – March 2026 collaboratively curated with other cohort members
Usage of the Centre A Gallery space throughout the program
Curatorial, administration and marketing support and mentorship, including event assets such as social media promotion, postcards and exhibition photos
Exclusive access to five arts, culture and community talks/workshops with other participants
Space, refreshments, and facilitation for five cohort meet-ups to connect, reflect on the talks/workshops and plan for the culminating exhibition
The opportunity to connect and collaborate with other emerging arts practitioners in Vancouver
Opportunities for networking and collaboration with local and international publishers, publications, galleries, and arts institutions
ABOUT THE LEAD PROGRAMMER:
Geraldine Yaris is a queer, multidisciplinary, Filipino-Canadian artist and cultural worker from the unceded territory of the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm, Coquitlam. Outside her role as the Communications Officer at Centre A, her favourite activities include painting, dancing, and the occasional karaoke night. She has often struggled with where her Filipino identity fits into her creative journey. After Lapu Lapu day, the grief of the Filipino diasporic community was made highly visible—all the while, Filipinos continued to face structural barriers to cultural community hubs and resources through which to process collectively. Experiencing this gap in need has inspired Geraldine to leverage the impact of her work in the arts sector, to create programs that strengthen her community by uplifting her peers. She holds a Bachelor of Design degree from Capilano University and has collaborated with Capilano Courier, City of Coquitlam, One More Life Gallery, SADMAG, Chairman Ting and more.

Each session centers around a simple Filipino meal and a language theme, offering participants the chance to practice speaking in an informal, peer-led environment.
Activities include guided conversations, vocabulary building, and cultural games, all grounded in the everyday language of family, identity, and belonging.
The program is part of a broader effort to nurture a connection to Filipino heritage among second-generation youth and newcomers. It affirms that language learning doesn’t have to happen in a classroom, it can happen around the dinner table, over laughter, lumpia, and lived experience.
Come hungry for more than just a meal, come for the stories, the laughter, and the kwentuhan!
🗓 Dates: August 5 and 19, 5:00-8:00 pm
